While 5G wireless networks have become operational in various regions across the globe, researchers, both in academic and industrial settings, are actively engaged in propelling the evolution from the fifth to the sixth generation of wireless networks. This ongoing research encompasses diverse avenues, including the utilization of artificial intelligence in wireless networks, the integration of sensing capabilities with communication functionalities, the fusion of terrestrial and non-terrestrial network infrastructures, the exploration of the FR3 upper-midband (7-15 GHz), the deployment of reconfigurable intelligent surfaces, the adoption of innovative EMF-compliant MIMO techniques, and the use of multi-TRP cell-free network architectures.

This talk will provide an overview of these technologies, highlighting their progress into Standardization fora, and the main advantages and research challenges that they bring.

The adoption of standardized protocols significantly contributes to achieving interoperability among devices, regardless of their respective manufacturers, thereby underscoring the crucial role of standardization activities. The IEEE 1451 family of standards explicitly facilitates the seamless integration of intelligent transducers, facilitating data acquisition through network infrastructures and access to process actuators. This presentation will delve into the intricate development aspects of a Transducer Interface Module (TIM), focusing mainly on its internal architecture. Furthermore, it will explore the interconnection between the TIM and the Network Capable Application Processor (NCAP). It will elucidate the mechanisms that afford access to TIM management services and enable interaction with the user network.

Emerging applications, such as virtualized industrial automation, mobile robots, and immersive user experiences need distributed computing and networking with precise time and determinism.  This talk will discuss networking technologies, standards and industry ecosystem developing to enable precise time and deterministic data delivery in converged networks. The talk will discuss the critical role of time and network performance measurements in testing and managing Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) capabilities that enable mixed criticality applications in converged networks. The presentation will also cover open research challenges and new paradigms managing next generation wired and wireless networks for deterministic performance.
